Sharon Zhu

AJ Park IP Limited, Auckland

Sharon is an associate in AJ Park’s Auckland engineering and IT team. She combines her expertise in law and engineering to help clients protect their innovations and bring their ideas to life.

Sharon joined AJ Park in July 2016. Practising in all areas of patent law for mechanical and manufacturing technologies, Sharon conducts patent searches, assists with the prosecution of patent applications, helps draft patent specifications, and advises on patentability and freedom to operate.

Sharon has completed conjoint honours degrees at the University of Auckland—a law degree and an engineering degree specialising in biomedical engineering. An interest in these areas naturally led her to intellectual property law, a profession that bridges these fields.

‘I really enjoy biomedical engineering because it combines many different disciplines into a meaningful application and gives me the skills to resolve challenges in industries such as healthcare.’

Working style

Methodical, efficient and thorough, Sharon relates well to people who think long-term and enjoys working with clients who have a real passion for their work. She believes good communication and a common goal are essential elements of a successful working relationship.

It’s inspiring to interact with people with a wealth of knowledge in their respective areas, and to be among the first to come into contact with new inventions and technology. What’s really fulfilling is the opportunity to be part of a process that brings ideas to life.

Sharon has held intern and research assistant positions?at the Auckland Bioengineering Institute, where she researched new engineering solutions in the areas of biology and human physiology. She also worked as a teaching assistant at the University of Auckland’s Department of Engineering Science. While working as a law clerk at Eldon Chambers, she assisted two barristers specialising in the fields of maritime and sports law, and Māori rights and issues.

‘I’ve always been fascinated by people’s ability to identify a problem that needs solving and then devise an effective solution. I wanted to work directly with clients who create game-changing, innovative products and services. Understanding the law allows me to help protect those ideas legally from exploitation.’

Beyond work

When not at the office, Sharon likes to stay active with kickboxing, swimming and trail walking. Another way she likes to relax is cooking and trying out new recipes.?
